Route description

Kurgaktor and Altyn-Arashan reveal different sides of the Terskey Alatau. Around the pass, rocky mountain terrain and serious alpine preparation set the pace; in the Arashan valley, meadows, Tien Shan spruce and hot springs offer a quieter stop. A prepared party can explore the relationship between the pass country and the thermal valley. This version starts high in the mountains and continues beyond Altyn-Arashan towards northern slopes. A complete passage through that final link has not been established and needs separate agreement with a guide before choosing the whole outing. Ala-Kol Lake is not an established stop on this version.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
The appeal is Kurgaktor itself and the transition from rocky pass country to Altyn-Arashan’s thermal valley. Choose that combination as a prepared mountain journey after identifying the continuation beyond the springs.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The high mountain start requires a separate approach, acclimatisation and technical pass preparation. The complete continuation after Altyn-Arashan remains unidentified. Dog rules and coverage throughout the outing are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Ala-Kol Lake and Ala-Kol North Pass belong to a separate lake itinerary south of this version. The named outdoor baths Tsarevna-Lyagushka and Lastochkino Gnezdo lie away from the established thermal-area passage and require an additional outing. Karakol is a useful base for preparation and recovery after mountain days.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrange an intercity journey to Karakol first. The ride to a separate mountain approach and pickup after the valley outing must be organised independently; a scheduled service to the high start is not confirmed.
By car
A vehicle cannot deliver you to the pass: the high start needs a walking approach. For conventional Altyn-Arashan access, the local operator describes a rough mountain road and suitable off-road transport. Agree an achievable drop-off and pickup with the driver and guide before travelling.
Parking
There is no confirmed parking information for the high start. Arrange vehicle storage in Karakol and settle pickup only after choosing an actual mountain exit.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1503 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The historical Kurgaktor account includes rock, scree and snow; this is not a straightforward lakeside walk. Agree the passage method, protection and current snow conditions with a qualified guide. Beyond Altyn-Arashan, do not assume a direct continuation across northern slopes: a named safe passage there has not yet been established.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 8 h 32 min

Time for the route | Not established With stops | Not established The full duration is not established because a separate mountain link after the springs still requires identification. First agree the Kurgaktor passage and Altyn-Arashan approach with a guide; then independently select a safe exit to the lower valley. An Ala-Kol lake itinerary or the conventional road descent cannot supply the missing time. Settle the approach to the high start, nights and weather reserve before travelling.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Agree a summer mountain outing using fresh snow information and a settled forecast. Access to the hot springs does not establish pass conditions at Kurgaktor. Early snowfall calls for a reassessment of the entire alpine plan.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain footwear, a helmet and technical equipment specified by the guide.
Rain protection, warm layers and agreed overnight equipment.
Reserve food, water treatment, an offline map and backup power; bathing items are useful only for an independently agreed springs visit.
