Route description

Leaving Karakol’s eastern side, the journey heads towards Arashan Valley. Altyn-Arashan becomes an intermediate stop before the climb into Keldike. Ala-Kul appears beyond the pass: first from the rocky crossing, then close up along the shore on the descent towards Karakol Gorge. This order suits walkers who want to approach the lake from the east and finish among the spruces, visiting the hot springs early in the mountain journey.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Poor This high crossing requires mountain experience, cold-weather camping and an independent retreat plan. Arrange a ride in Karakol if travelling without a car; there is no confirmed service linking the mountain trailheads. Dog and bicycle access is unverified. Do not depend on reception for help.

Nearby

Visit Altyn-Arashan’s hot springs under an agreed local plan; individual bathing facilities have their own opening arrangements. Surrounding summits and an onward Telety crossing are separate outings.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Begin on Karakol’s eastern side, using a local ride to the agreed start if needed, then walk towards Altyn-Arashan. Arrange the return ride from Karakol Valley in advance; public transport at the mountain end is not confirmed.
By car
Choose a drop-off point in eastern Karakol and a pickup location in Karakol Gorge. A vehicle-assisted approach on the Arashan side changes the walking stages and overnight plan, so agree the reachable drop-off separately.
Parking
Arrange multi-day car storage with accommodation in Karakol. A dedicated parking area at the mountain finish has not been verified; do not leave that decision until after descending.

SurfaceImproved surface 23%, Gravel 11%, Dirt 6%, Unknown 52%.
Риски Keldike leads to a high climb and a descent over stones and scree to the lake. Snowfall can change the summer passage. Keep energy for the final descent into Karakol Valley and decide where to wait out bad weather before committing to the pass.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 3–4 days
With stops | 4–5 days Allow a first approach day to Arashan, a separate pass-and-lake stage, then the Karakol Valley exit. Starting in Karakol adds walking compared with a drop-off closer to Altyn-Arashan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer and early September are the main planning window, subject to pass conditions. Accessible lower roads in spring do not establish that the upper crossing is ready. Autumn needs a particularly early start on the pass day.

What to bring
