Route description

Torpo and Kum-Bel link several Kichik-Alay valleys into a distinctive mountain crossing. The route first reaches Torpo, continues towards Kum-Bel, then descends into the Korgon and Kyrgyz-Ata river system. Between the saddles, the changing directions of the headwater valleys are as interesting as the neighbouring ridges. Choose this journey with an experienced group and a guide familiar with both sides of the passes. Together the two saddles reveal a broad picture of Kichik-Alay: one leaves the southern approach behind, while the other opens the northern valleys. Arrange stops and overnight stays to reach the passes in good weather with energy in reserve.

Getting there

Show on map
Without a car
A regular service to the mountain start has not been confirmed. Arrange a transfer, walking approach and agreed exit on the Kyrgyz-Ata side. Discuss the complete transport plan with your organiser before departure.

What to expect

Places
Torpo Pass A saddle linking the southern Torpochaty approaches with valleys on the northern side of Kichik-Alay.
Kum-Bel Pass The pass connects the Chugam and Korgon valleys, with the Korgon side continuing into the Kyrgyz-Ata river system.

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gain
Check the southern Torpo approach particularly carefully. A historical first-hand report describes canyon dead ends, unstable slopes and difficult crossings in the neighbouring river corridor. Use a verified path rather than a direct descent into a canyon. Snow, thunderstorms and visibility matter on both passes; identify the current line with an experienced local guide.

How much time to allow

Plan 2–3 walking days, plus reserves for weather and approaches. Each pass needs its own time allowance, depending on snow, paths and water conditions. This crossing needs more planning than a short weekend outing.

Best time to go

The summer mountain season and early autumn after a fresh check of both saddles. Southern approaches can be hot while passes and camps are cold. Snow and hazardous river levels can change plans even in July or August.

What to bring

Mountain boots, poles, warm layers and waterproof clothing.
A tent, suitable sleeping bag, food reserves and water treatment.
An offline map of neighbouring valleys and emergency equipment; the leader must select snow and crossing gear for current conditions.
