Route description

This journey brings together two independent Caucasus areas: Cherek valley with Verkhnyaya Balkariya, and the road from Alagir towards Buron. In the first part, drives alternate with walking visits around the lake area, narrows and old Ishkanty settlement. The second introduces the Ardon, Transkam and Uastyrdzhi’s rock monument, where a mounted warrior appears to emerge from the mountain. A separately planned drive is needed between the Balkarian and Ossetian parts; no continuous walking crossing is supplied. Visit the old road above Cherek and the ruins separately after checking access and conditions. Giving each valley its own time is more rewarding than rushing every stop into one day.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - With caution With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - Partially Mobile signal - No data The principal plan uses road travel with separate walking stops. Children should use safe accessible places under supervision. The old road above the narrows and the ruins are unsuitable for a stroller walk. A complete cycling passage, dog rules and continuous reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Tsei valley and Nuzal Chapel can form separate extensions of the Ossetian journey; visits inside them are excluded. Ushtulu lies beyond Verkhnyaya Balkariya and also needs its own road plan. Extra gorges do not replace the missing inter-regional drive.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Confirmed public transport linking all selected stops and both regional parts is unavailable. Without a private car, agree arrival and collection for each visiting day separately; a single ready-made timetable is unestablished.
By car
The Balkarian part uses the road direction through Babugent towards Verkhnyaya Balkariya; the Ossetian part uses roads from Alagir along the Ardon towards Buron. These form an editorial driving plan with walking stops. Choose the inter-regional journey separately on current roads; do not drive onto the old tourist road above the narrows or the Ishkanty paths.
Parking
The regional tourism portal confirms vehicle parking beside Uastyrdzhi Monument. Information for the other stops and lengthy storage is separately unconfirmed. Avoid stopping in tunnels, narrow passages or places where a car obstructs traffic.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 3331 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски At the narrows, distinguish the working road from the old pedestrian passage above the river: the latter needs current assessment because of cliffs and rockfall slopes. Avoid climbing ruin walls. On Transkam consider traffic restrictions, tunnels, precipitation and driver fatigue. Missing connections between visits must use existing permitted roads rather than a shortcut across mountain ground.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 3 h 45 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Time for the route | Not established for the whole journey With stops | Not established Allow 2 separate visiting days for the two regional parts: one for Cherek valley, another for Alagir and the road towards Buron. The complete journey time is unestablished because inter-regional travel, the return drive and walking stops need their own plan. A multi-day plan for the complete passage has not been established. The selected portions do not measure the whole trip.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Dry, snow-free and ice-free conditions suit walking stops best. Mountain roads can be temporarily restricted by bad weather in any season; check road reports for both regions before departure.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
A roadworthy car, road equipment and a planned fuel reserve.
Grippy footwear, warm clothing and waterproofs for walking visits.
