Route description

This Tsar’s Trail begins beside old Ishkanty on the southern side of Verkhnyaya Balkariya. Mountain-house ruins lie beside the first part of the walk; the path then leaves the settlement towards Ishkyrty and the southern slopes. Examine the stone remains before watching the inhabited landscape give way to mountain pastoral ground. Keep masonry in place and avoid unstable structures. The walk finishes outside the village, so arrange the return beforehand. The famous old road through Cherek Narrows lies in another direction and requires a separate visit.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 2–3 h outward
With stops | 4–6 h including return The selected walk runs from Ishkanty across the Ishkyrty valley side to the southern slopes. Allow 1 day of walking for the passage and return. The first line covers one direction; returning adds pauses and another river crossing. This outing is separate from the old Cherek Narrows road farther north.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose dry snow-free conditions after checking the bridge and hillside path. Spring snowmelt and heavy rain can complicate the crossing. Ice and winter conditions need a different plan; proximity to a village does not remove hillside hazards.
