Route description

From Terskol the road gradually climbs the side of the Baksan valley towards Maiden Braids waterfall. The lower landmark is the Zulkarni-hajji Tilov mosque; take the left direction after the park entrance. The ascent opens the surrounding mountain landscape before the broad road becomes a narrower path near the destination. The waterfall is immediately recognisable: water spreads over hard basalt in separate strands resembling loose hair. Glacial meltwater feeds the flow, so its appearance changes with the season. Pause at a safe viewing place, then return to Terskol. A grotto exists behind the water, but falling stones make entering it an optional step requiring separate assessment.

Route at a glance

The interest lies in the way the basalt slope itself separates the water into many fine strands. Maiden Braids provides a clear ascent destination followed by a return to the village without continuing higher into the mountains.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceGravel 95%, Compacted dirt 1%.
Риски The final path narrows and wet stone requires secure footing. Avoid slippery edges beside the falling water. Stones can fall from the grotto roof behind the flow; viewing outside avoids this additional exposure. Check park visiting arrangements and the forecast before departure.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 3.5–4.5 h outward and return
With stops | 5–6 h The selected ascent ends at Maiden Braids, so this ordinary day allowance includes retracing the path to Terskol. The stopping allowance agrees with the publisher’s five-hour waterfall plan. Continuing to the observatory is excluded. Begin early enough to descend before deteriorating weather and darkness.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
An ordinary walking day requires snow-free conditions and a settled forecast. Summer glacier melt makes the flow fuller; spring and late autumn require separate checks for lingering snow and ice. The winter approach should not be treated as the same outing as a summer walk.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Grippy footwear for mountain walking.
