Route description

Moldoveanu comes at the end of a substantial journey on the southern side of Făgăraș. Starting beside Transfăgărășan, the path follows a valley approach before reaching broad mountain pastures and a chain of ridges. Higher up, Galbena, Curmătura Moldoveanului and Piscul Roșu become the main landmarks before the final summit ascent. This version includes returns over familiar ground; treat it as an extensive exploration of the southern approaches rather than the shortest ascent. Broad mountain shoulders become a more pronounced ridge nearer Moldoveanu. The finish is on the mountain, so the valley exit and overnight arrangements belong in an independently prepared walking plan.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data This long mountain outing needs independent preparation and orientation skills. The endpoint is a summit, so a descent to a road must be added. Dog rules, signal and serviced overnight stays are unconfirmed.

Nearby

The Vâlsan-dam approach has a different start even though it joins the same upper ridge chain. Galbena Lake and Viștea Mare are outside the chosen stops; visiting them or descending through Valea Rea needs another route plan.

Getting there

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceGravel 21%, Unknown 79%.
Риски The long approach, sparse marking and open upper ridges require a sustainable pace and independent orientation. Secure footing matters on scree and the narrowing ridge. Do not continue by guesswork in fog. Snow conditions turn the upper passage into an undertaking for a prepared mountain group.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 24–32 h
With stops | 30–40 h An editorial allowance for the entire selected journey, including repeated passages: 3–4 days of walking, or 4–5 days with relaxed stops. Day 1 covers the valley approach and southern pastures; subsequent days cover the upper ridges and remaining returns; the last reaches Moldoveanu. This is not the duration of the shorter Vâlsan-dam ascent. Establish overnight arrangements and water beforehand; the summit descent and transport return need additional planning.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Prefer a snow-free window and a settled forecast covering the whole upper journey. Rain and thunderstorms matter on the open ridge; a spare day allows waiting rather than a rushed ascent.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain boots, wind and rain protection, and a warm layer.
Navigation with an independent backup, a headlamp and spare power.
Food, water with checked replenishment points, and equipment for agreed overnight arrangements.
