Route description

The Sarela reveals another side of Santiago de Compostela, from the northern outskirts near Romaño through Galeras and Carme de Abaixo to Vidán. Asén Bridge, Ruibal’s literary memorial and the chapel beside Carme’s old crossing give the riverside its distinct landmarks. The river’s past includes leather workshops; the former Carme tannery is now housing. Farther downstream, the outing reaches Vidán Bridge and a separate crossing of the Sar. Choose this extended river walk for a day among places easily missed during a cathedral visit.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
This is the full walking version between separate endpoints, including a branch and a return over part of the way. With children, consider a separately planned shorter walk around Galeras and Carme. Keep children close beside the water and dogs under control. Continuous bicycle or stroller access has not been established.

Nearby

The cathedral and Santiago’s historic centre are beyond this river walk and need a separate city approach. Climbing Pedroso or visiting the Monte de Deus viewpoint is also an additional outing. The former Carme tannery has become housing: respect private entrances and do not expect an industrial museum visit. Rocha Forte Castle is not part of the Sarela walk.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Ask TUSSA about travel to Romaño and return from Vidán on your date. Check current stops, the last service and the approach to the exact start. A separate walk from the historic centre reaches Galeras and the middle of the itinerary; the northern start of the full version is farther away. Allow time for an additional city walk or transport after finishing.
By car
Arrange a drop-off at the northern start near Romaño and collection near the Vidán finish. If leaving the car in the city, choose the return method beforehand. Use a legal stopping place on an accessible street, keep local access clear and do not attempt to drive up to pedestrian bridges.
Parking
Dedicated parking at this version’s exact start has not been established. Ask whether you may legally leave a car in your chosen city location during the walk. Check signs and time restrictions. Leaving a car for a long period at the final Sar crossing also requires separate arrangements.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 140 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 24%, Compacted dirt 24%, Dirt 12%, Unknown 30%.
Риски Riverside paths and stone steps may become slippery after rain. Check crossings when water rises and avoid flooded passages. Watch for cars where the walk meets streets. Do not assume the entire version is suitable for a stroller; its different surfaces and junctions require local assessment.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 46 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow half a day or an unhurried day for the complete walk with bridge and Carme stops. The northern approach, branch and partial return take longer than a short outing around Galeras. Start and finish differ, so arrange the city walk back or transport separately. Before setting out in wet weather, choose somewhere to finish early.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a day without heavy rain or high-water warnings. In spring and autumn, riverside stops combine well with exploring Santiago. Carry water in summer and account for shorter daylight in cooler months. After downpours, postpone the outing if the riverside passage is unsafe.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Shoes with a grippy sole
A waterproof outer layer
Water and a small snack
A map of riverside junctions and city exits
A charged phone
A lead when walking with a dog
