Route description

At Ogonki, suburban arrival soon gives way to a skiing day in the forests of Olkhinskoye Plateau. From the station’s southern side, the approach reaches Malaya Olkha and climbs toward the Big Mountaineering Marathon ski course. A complete forest loop links the eastern stream hollows, the southern side near Komuryasty and an open power-line clearing leading toward the upper junction. Revisiting these places is part of the outing’s appeal. After the first loop, the forest becomes familiar and pauses and effort can be judged more deliberately. This variant includes two complete loops, followed by a separate eastern extension with a reversal and return to Ogonki. Check that reversal against the current permitted ski direction beforehand; the full outing depends on access and preparation of every section. Choose it for a long skiing day with forest climbs and descents. Quiet stretches among the trees, the clearing and the return to the riverside approach give it a distinct rhythm. Present snow and course conditions matter throughout.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Railway arrival at Ogonki allows a car-free plan. The full outing requires skiing endurance, confident braking and independent return: two complete loops are followed by an eastern extension and reversal. Check whether it agrees with the present permitted direction. Defer the full variant if reverse movement is prohibited or part is unprepared. A bicycle or stroller is unsuitable for this winter ski outing; a separate summer ride and dog rules are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Trudny, Sanatorny and Podkamennaya are starting places for other skiing outings on Olkhinskoye Plateau; their approaches are outside this variant. Extensions to rock formations or the Baikal shore also need separate planning. Accommodation near Yagodny appears in organizers’ race accounts; check present availability, access and booking with its owners. Here BAM refers to the Big Mountaineering Marathon; this outing does not visit the Baikal–Amur railway.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Local event organizers confirm railway arrival from Irkutsk at Ogonki halt. Choose present outward and return trains and separately check the platform exit to the southern beginning. Old timetables do not apply. Use a permitted equipped railway exit rather than walking along active rails. Choose the return train after assessing the full skiing day, and decide whether to finish before starting another forest loop.
By car
Prepare road arrival at Ogonki around present winter conditions and a permitted stopping point. Summer reports of improved road access from Khanchin do not establish present clearing, all-car access or parking availability. Check before leaving and keep passage clear for residents and working vehicles. Do not drive onto the forest ski course. The beginning and ending are near the settlement’s southern side; arrange vehicle storage separately.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Older organizers’ reports of roadside stopping concern a summer running event and do not establish a present winter parking facility. No place for leaving a car throughout this skiing day has been verified. Agree a permitted area beforehand or arrive by rail, keeping the forest entrance, junctions and working roads clear.

What to expect

Places
Malaya Olkha near the Ski-Course Approach a riverside place near the start of the forest climb, revisited before the ending.
Levinsky Creek on the Loop’s Eastern Side a named forest stream encountered on each complete loop.
Komuryasty Creek on the Loop’s Southern Side a forest stream marking the southern section of a complete loop. Check present crossings and water conditions separately; sound ice is not assumed.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceDirt / grass 7%, Dirt 2%, Unknown 91%.
Риски The initial forest climb and descent toward Ogonki require confident skiing technique. Conserve energy on repeated loops: a familiar junction does not mean the outing is finished. After two complete loops, the eastern extension reverses direction; part is mapped for one-way movement. Check current rules with those maintaining the course and obey the permitted direction. Defer the full variant if reversal is prohibited; do not invent a bypass. Snow cover, icy crust and overflow beside streams can change conditions even after grooming. Malaya Olkha, Levinsky and Komuryasty do not establish dry or safely frozen crossings. Avoid closed and unprepared sections. Race aid arrangements are unconfirmed for an independent outing.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 9 h 45 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Time for the route | Unestablished With stops | Unestablished Plan an independent skiing day after checking snow, preparation of the full loop and permission for the eastern reversal. Distribute effort between the Ogonki approach, two complete loops, the eastern extension and return to the station. Before the additional section, assess remaining daylight and the reserve needed for the descent. Official race finish times do not apply; neither a compulsory two-day trip nor accommodation is established. If movement is restricted, arrange a separate shorter outing before departure.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Winter with sufficient snow and confirmed preparation of every chosen section. Opening cannot be fixed by a calendar: snowfall may obscure the course, a thaw may leave crust, and stream hollows may contain water. Recent condition reports matter more than old race photographs. Check cold, wind, daylight and movement direction before travelling. Snow-free passage is a separate variant needing its own review.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Cross-country skis and poles suited to present grooming, with working bindings and boots.
Clothing for sustained movement and a separate warm layer for stops; hand, face and eye protection suited to the forecast.
A thermos or drinking supplies protected from freezing, and food for the entire forest day: operating aid stations are unconfirmed.
An offline area map distinguishing the forest loops and a prepared return, a charged phone and additional power.
A first-aid kit, spare gloves and a dry layer, plus a lamp for an unexpected delay.
A small repair kit suited to your ski equipment; share the outing and return plan with someone beforehand.
