Route description

The Kizir opens this long Eastern Sayan journey: a separately arranged boat transfer from the Zhuravlyovo area comes first, followed by the mountains of Tofalaria. Forested valleys give way to stony slopes and passes, with each watershed revealing a different mountain setting. The first major branch approaches the Grandiozny massif; the journey then links Pikhtovy, Pryamoy Kazyr and rocky Agulskaya Pila. The upper Grandiozny approach does not replace a separate safe plan for reaching the highest point. Beyond Ufimsky Pass, the journey continues through eastern valleys toward the Sigach Ridge. After its open slopes, Lake Agulskoye offers a striking change of scale. The mountain section then returns to the Pryamoy Kazyr basin and reaches the Kinzelyuk through the Fomkina valleys. Here the expedition takes on another character: a waterfall, mountain lakes and a separate outing across Firnovy Pass to Lake Medvezhye. The final mountain section crosses Udobny and returns to the Kizir valley. Arrange the onward boat journey to Kordovo separately. This is a historical expedition idea rather than a presently open leisure programme. Part of the journey affects Tofalarsky Sanctuary, where ordinary tourist visits are currently not provided. Discuss any lawful possibility with the protected-area administration first; do not plan the complete version without agreed legal access.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
For the variety of mountain Tofalaria: the Kizir and deep taiga valleys, Agulskaya Pila, open Sigach crossings, Lake Agulskoye and the mountain lakes around the Kinzelyuk. Its appeal comes from changing basins and the return of expansive water after rocky slopes and passes. For a prepared group, it offers a substantial expedition idea whose feasibility begins with protected-area agreement and complete return arrangements.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data Rail can be considered for arrival at Zhuravlyovo, followed by an agreed boat transfer and a separate return after the mountain section. This is a remote expedition for a prepared group experienced with mountain rivers, scree and self-supported nights. The complete version is unsuitable for a children’s holiday, bicycle or stroller. Resolve sanctuary access before planning travel; dog conditions and continuous reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Mongolsky Pass and Lednikovaya Peak lie near the eastern section, but their independent passage is outside this plan. Other Kinzelyuk Waterfall approaches through the Agul or by helicopter require separate arrangements and access checks. Huts and camps mentioned in old accounts are not confirmed accommodation. After the mountain finish, organise the onward boat journey to Kordovo separately; an earlier visit does not authorise sanctuary entry or use of someone else’s shelter.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Zhuravlyovo Railway Station is the initial railway reference on the settled Kizir side. Historical participants arrived by train; check the chosen present service’s stop and permitted approach to the meeting place separately. A private boat transfer upstream on the Kizir followed: a regular passenger service to the mountain start is unconfirmed. After the mountain section, a separate boat journey to a settlement and onward land transport remain. Agree all meetings, time reserves and delayed-return arrangements before departure.
By car
Arrange vehicle arrival on the settled Zhuravlyovo side after checking the present road and meeting place. The historical plan then used boats, followed by mountain walking. A different camp approach through Stepanovka and the Agul does not serve this start. Agree drop-off, river delivery and vehicle storage as separate arrangements; a road to the mountain passes is unestablished.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Before travelling, ask whether the vehicle can remain on the settled Zhuravlyovo side for the complete expedition. Railway land, a riverbank and a boat meeting place do not establish permitted car storage. A secure yard, responsibility for the vehicle and returning to it need a separate agreement.

What to expect

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 8458 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Lawful access comes first: the Tofalarsky Sanctuary administration does not provide ordinary tourist visits. Buying a Pribaikalsky National Park permit does not authorise this expedition. Separately assess Kizir boat passage, every mountain river crossing, snow and scree slopes, and evacuation options. Old ford positions, wooden crossings and huts do not establish present safety. Lakes require a checked shore passage: a short direction across water is not a walking path. The old Udobny descent met severe fallen timber, so prepare the present descent afresh. Summit ascents and passage near the waterfall need independent mountain decisions rather than the shortest direction.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 5 d 10 h

Time for the route | Unestablished With stops | Unestablished The day-by-day schedule for a multiday outing is unestablished. Allow separately for arrival, boat delivery, the self-supported mountain section, reserve days and the boat return. The historical expedition took about a month including travel, but that schedule is not a current standard. Agree overnight places, food supplies, scheduled meetings and poor-weather reserves anew. Finishing the mountain section beside the Kizir does not mean reaching a train or vehicle.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The historical journey took place in summer; a new plan needs stable summer conditions and confirmed lawful access. High passes can retain snow and hazardous snow slopes even in summer. Rain changes mountain rivers, wet rock and valley passage. The waterfall’s general summer visiting season does not establish access across every pass in this expedition. Autumn, winter and transitional seasons need a different independent mountain plan; lake ice is not an assumed replacement for shore passage.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
A complete self-supported camping setup, warm clothing, rain protection and footwear for rock and wet taiga.
Food, fuel and a drinking-water treatment method for the entire agreed plan with reserves.
Mountain-valley and pass maps, compass, satellite communication and backup power.
Group first-aid supplies, repair equipment, headlamps and insect protection.
An experienced leader determines snow, rock and river-crossing equipment after checking conditions. Agree a suitable boat, lifesaving equipment, crew experience and permitted boarding places separately. Fishing is not a food-supply plan in the sanctuary.
