Route description

From Vydrino, this demanding taiga variant heads towards Grokhotun, Bolshoye Sobolinoye Lake and Skazka, then includes difficult slopes between the lake side and Snezhnaya. Returning through the Sobolinoye valley brings it back towards the settlements, while a separate northern continuation reaches Baikal’s shore. Calm lake water neighbours waterfalls and river passages requiring independent preparation. During the historical outing, the attempt to reach Ara-Burektay failed because of steep slopes and difficult woodland. That through-passage is unpromised here. Complete connections and present crossings remain unestablished; choose a checked programme and accompaniment beforehand. A reconnaissance outing’s name does not establish a safe modern path across the complete watershed.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
For experienced self-sufficient walkers. Railway arrival serves lower Vydrino, but the complete variant requires navigation and river-crossing judgement. An ordinary lake excursion differs from this multi-day outing.

Nearby

Ara-Burektay and Langutai Gates remain directions beyond the established through-passage. Maloye Sobolinoye and other lake shores require their own approaches. Warm Lakes and Taltsinsky’s summits are independent outings, excluded from this programme unless arranged separately.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
The operator confirms suburban services to Vydrino and engineering changes affecting some trains. Check operating outward and return services for your date. Establish return from the Baikal ending to your selected railway arrival independently; a specific current Tolbazikha service is unconfirmed.
By car
Agree delivery and collection on lower Vydrino’s settlement side. Establish an authorised drop-off and local driving access beforehand. Access roads to the waterfalls, mountainous lake section and complete coastal ending are unconfirmed; continue through taiga on foot.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle storage at the lower approach, allowing for separate return from Baikal’s shore.

What to expect

Places
Grokhotun Waterfall the actual waterfall approach on Gramotukha, viewed cautiously from the river side.
Bolshoye Sobolinoye Lake the actual shore-side passage beside the named lake among wooded slopes.
Skazka Waterfall an author-confirmed Krasnaya River approach; check wet ground and crossings independently.
Selenginka valley the actual wooded river surroundings of the lake approach and return.
Snezhnaya valley the river side genuinely reached by the demanding inner section.
Baikal shore near Tolbazikha the actual coastal continuation after returning from taiga, without a promised developed beach.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The watershed between Snezhnaya and the Sobolinoye side involves steep overgrown slopes, stones and route-finding. These difficulties caused the historical party to change plans. Wet stones and high water are hazards at Grokhotun, Skazka and the river approaches. Historical bridges, logs and cabins are not assumed to provide operating facilities. Do not connect unknown sections directly through a canyon or dense woodland.

How much time to allow

С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
This variant’s complete duration is unconfirmed. A day-by-day plan is not established. For a multi-day outing, separately select visited places, authorised overnights, connections and railway exit. A short Sobolinoye excursion’s duration excludes the reconnaissance watershed and Baikal ending; reserve time for weather and water.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The snow-free taiga season with a stable forecast and checked crossings. Heavy rain may make river-side cliffs and crossings impassable. Allow for cold nights and early snow even when Baikal is warm; a prepared winter passage is unconfirmed.
