Route description

From the lower Bolshoy Mamay valley, this multi-day mountain passage climbs towards Polyana, continues along Osinovka’s ridge side and enters upper Barun-Selenginka’s river system. After open mountain ground, the ending returns to river-side taiga: no settlement, vehicle collection or Snezhnaya shore is reached there. The defining feature is sustained travel across different sides of Khamar-Daban rather than a short Polyana ascent. Sobolinoye lakes, Snezhnaya and return to Vydrino lie beyond the actual ending and need a separate plan. Check current Burpriroda agreement for the Mamay section beforehand, then organise further passage, crossings and exit independently.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For an experienced self-sufficient group with mountain navigation and river judgement. A lower Mamay walk differs greatly in scope. Establish animal rules and authorised overnights throughout your selected territories; final transport is excluded.

Nearby

Sobolinoye lakes, Snezhnaya and Vydrino require independent continuation down the river system beyond the ending. Obruchev’s summit and Baikal Pass belong to a different mountain direction and are not added from a similar name. A separate lower Mamay excursion excludes distant Barun-Selenginka.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание

Риски Beyond Polyana comes sustained mountain travel with independent route-finding. Descents involve stones, thickets and wet slopes; rain can sharply complicate river-valley travel. The historical account describes demanding tributaries and river-side cliffs without confirming a present continuous path. Avoid descent into an unknown canyon and do not transfer an ordinary Polyana ascent’s relative ease to the complete passage.

How much time to allow

This variant’s complete duration is unconfirmed. A day-by-day plan is not established. For a multi-day outing, determine authorised overnights, food reserves, weather contingency and independent continuation beyond Barun-Selenginka beforehand. Historical complete-outing dates to Vydrino exclude this ending; one- or two-day Polyana visits also do not describe the entire passage.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The snow-free mountain season with a stable forecast and passable crossings. High water, rain and fog may change plans for several days. Mamay restrictions vary seasonally: check current agreement and passage conditions before departure. Winter freeriding in the opening valley does not establish winter access throughout this direction.
