Route description

A Terskey Ala-Too spur separates two neighbouring gorges south of Issyk-Kul. This crossing starts inside Chon-Kyzyl-Suu, climbs to a saddle and descends to Kichi-Kyzyl-Suu, the valley of the “small red river”. It offers a way to discover the connections between mountain valleys and continue west without first returning to the lakeshore. Its character comes from a compact pass episode between two river valleys. On the Kichi-Kyzyl-Suu side, the path approaches the river itself, a good place to pause and look back at the spur. A return outing needs a separate plan; on a longer trek, this can serve as a connecting stage. The journey begins in the mountains, so access from inhabited places remains a separate part of the trip.

Getting there

Show on map
Without a car
No verified regular service has been found reaching the mountain start and finish. Arrange arrival on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul, then discuss both valley approaches with your local host or organiser. If ending beside the Kichi-Kyzyl-Suu River, include the onward descent through the gorge in your plan.
By car
Treat road access to each valley separately. Check road and crossing conditions and the place where a driver can wait. Vehicle travel over the saddle has not been confirmed; plan to walk between the two ends.
Parking
Organised long-term vehicle storage at the mountain endpoints has not been established. Arrange storage at a lower base and collection if the journey continues through another valley.

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gain
The spur crossing needs confident mountain walking and navigation on the descent into the next gorge. Rain can make slope and riverside sections slippery; check crossings before departure. The saddle has not been matched to a named tourist pass passport, so do not apply a neighbouring pass’s grade or elevation to it. Tell your host which spur you will cross and which valley you will finish in. In fog, avoid descending an arbitrary watercourse; identify the intended path beforehand. Do not force a high-water crossing to meet a driver; agree an alternative plan.

How much time to allow

A preliminary allowance for a fit walker is one walking day on a dry trail, excluding long approaches from the lower valleys. This is a planning estimate, not a published completion time. Add reserve for navigation and a river pause, plus travel to the start and onward walking after the finish.

Best time to go

Choose a warm period with a snow-free saddle and settled forecast. A precise seasonal window for this particular crossing has not been verified in a primary route account. Ask locally about the upper section and reassess crossings after heavy rain.

What to bring

Walking footwear with reliable grip
Waterproof layer and warm clothing for the saddle
Offline map of both valleys and backup phone power
