Route description

The water journey begins on Lake Kimasyarvi and follows the Pista through lakes, wooded pools and named rapids. The upper section passes Sakal and Zakhar, then takes Padun’s right channel. Between wider lake sections, this version also uses the right Interlake branch, leaving the central Kovarny channel aside. Seven-Bend and further river links follow Lake Pistajarvi; downstream come Furlyalyai, Imisev, Talii, Hirvi and Poalla. A final passage across Upper Kuito reaches the shore near Voinitsa. The Pista combines calm paddling between forested shores with demanding fast water. This multi-day outing requires a prepared crew, inspection in actual water conditions and a prearranged shore meeting.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Experience a northern waterway’s rhythm: leave a noisy river section for open lake water, then encounter rapids again among forested shores. Pistajarvi and Upper Kuito give the journey scale, while named obstacles make each river day distinctive.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Poor For a prepared paddling group with safety and communication equipment. This is an independent extended version; training and family tour conditions are agreed separately. A mobile phone must not be the only communication method.

Nearby

Interlake Rapid’s central Kovarny channel differs from the selected right passage. Padun’s other branch also does not describe this version. Kumi waterfall on the Voinitsa River, village tours and further Kuito-system travel are outside the descent. Check named shore camps and bases separately: a mapped name does not guarantee permission, space, food or vehicle transport.

What to expect

Places
Lake Kimasyarvi The starting lake before entering the upper Pista. Arrange boat assembly and crew practice at an agreed shore.
Sakal Rapid One of the first named rapids after the lake start. A prepared crew decides how to proceed after inspecting it.
Zakhar Rapid An upper-river rapid section with islands and bends, requiring particular attention early in the descent.
Snake Rapid A named river section after Zakhar, continuing the sequence of upper rapids.
Salty Rapid The next notable rapid section before the river divides near Padun.
Padun right channel This version uses the right river branch. Inspect it independently; conditions in the other channel do not describe this passage.
Interlake Rapid right channel The right-hand passage between wider lake sections. The central Kovarny channel is separate.
Lake Pistajarvi An extensive lake crossing between forested shores. Wind and the crew’s readiness for sustained paddling matter here.
Seven-Bend Rapid A named winding section after the lake passage. Allow time for inspection and shore decisions.
Lone Tree Rapid A separate rapid below Seven-Bend, before the next lake and river links.
Rooster Rapid A named river rapid in the middle section, whose condition changes with water level.
Furlyalyai Rapid A notable rapid section before the lower Imisev–Talii–Hirvi sequence.
Imisev Rapid An extended winding river section downstream. Prepare before entering fast water.
Talii Rapid A separate named obstacle between Imisev and Hirvi.
Hirvi Rapid The lower rapid section before Lake Korpijarvi. A lake link and Poalla still follow.
Lake Korpijarvi The lake section after Hirvi. Check suitable landing shores, camping and road exits in advance.
Poalla Rapid A sequence of stepped river sections before the final lake passage. Treat it as a distinct demanding stage.
Lake Upper Kuito The final lake passage towards Voinitsa. After the river rapids, wind, waves and an agreed shore meeting matter again.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 158 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Rapids require inspection, a prepared crew and shore safety arrangements; portage when necessary. Padun’s right channel and the right Interlake passage must be assessed separately from neighbouring branches. Headwinds and waves complicate long lakes. Before Poalla, preserve time and energy for every river step and the final Upper Kuito passage. The remote setting requires a prearranged emergency exit.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 d 2 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Multi-day journey. A day-by-day plan is not established. Complete duration depends on water level, inspections, portages, lake winds and permitted overnight places. Divide this specific version into stages with reserves for the upper sequence, Pistajarvi, lower rapids and final Upper Kuito. Published six-day and nine-day commercial programmes have different conditions and do not establish this descent’s calendar.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Open water at levels suitable for the prepared group and with a stable forecast. High water strengthens obstacles; low water adds rock contact and portages. Cold water, wind and short daylight are particularly important in autumn; an October journey needs separate substantial preparation and agreed logistics.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода

Cold-water protection, spare dry clothing, rain layers and first aid.
