Route description

West Kara-Ayyrma leaves the main Isfayram-Say valley for the side gorges of Kichik-Alay. The walk gradually turns away from the larger river, passes the Austan area and climbs to a saddle overlooking the Katta-Karagandy valley. Its appeal is the change from a river corridor to the divide between neighbouring valleys. Pay close attention to junctions in the herders’ paths. A companion familiar with local names and valley exits is particularly useful here. Their knowledge brings the crossing to life as a connection between valleys and the places people use during the mountain season.
